The Bergsons were originally called Kreutzer, but this was changed upon arrival to the UK in Sunderland, when Philip Bergson asked the name of a prominent and successful local Jewish family, and thus adopted their name, in the interests of settlement and survival.
The following piece appears courtesy of Diana Burton, née Bergson. Additional details also come from Carl Goldberg.
“The Bergsons were immigrants from Riga and ran a large tailoring firm on Barkerend Road. They had orginally come from Birzie, Lithuania. After Meyer Kreutzer married Hoda Hyman they went to live in Riga where Hoda had eight children.
In 1890,the family (without Meyer) arrived at Hull, then to Sunderland and on to Bradford.
My dad Joseph Bergson was the youngest photographer in the area at his studio, ‘Studio Jorik’ on Manningham Lane and won awards. Uncle Max was a crack shot and world champion weight lifter. He won a world record in 1925 in the 10 stone class
and his cup is still presented.”
In amongst this large Bradford family there were two sisters Renee and Ester Bergson-Brown, who were both playwrights. They wrote “Rosie’s Sweet Shop and “Our Tale of Two Cities” which the critic John Slater wrote about in the Jewish Chronicle in 1953 or 1955. Ester married Edgar Rothschild (1924-2012) who had in 1938 as a teenager, come from Hanover, Germany to England. The couple had three children which include the Rabbi’s Walter and his sister Sylvia and their sister Joyce, an education consultant.
According to Raymond Dunn, an economic migrant to Bradford from North London in 1975, there used to be a derelict cluster of shops near the junction of Listerhills Road and Thornton Road. One of the empty shops bore the name ‘Bergson Tailors’.
Another successful member of the family is film critic, presenter and scriptwriter at BBC, the present day Phillip Bergson. Educated at Bradford Grammar School and then Balliol College, Oxford, Bergson has written for both the Sunday Standard and Sunday Times newspapers.
Film critic Phillip Bergson talks to the BBC’s Kasia Madera about the 2014 Golden Globe nominations, including 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Mandela, August Osage County and Philomena.

Bergson and Rothschild cousin Carl Goldberg‘s information from the National Archives:
The Kreutzer family originally came from Birzie, Lithuania. After Meyer Kreutzer married Hoda Hyman they went to live in Riga where Hoda had eight children.
In 1890, the family (without Meyer) arrived at Hull, then to Sunderland and on to Bradford.
Now my connection, the first two of the family to arrive in England was Philip Bergson (Diana’s grandfather) and Tilly Bergson (my grandmother). According to the 1894 census Tilly and Philip were living in No. 52 Northgate, Bradford with a family called Sunderland.
Just out of interest, Philip eventually married Leah Sunderland – the daughter of Harris Sunderland with whom they were
lodging. They were married in March 1891 at the orthodox synagogue, Bradford. My grandmother Tilly (nee Bergson ) was married to Philip Goldberg on May 14 1894 in the orthodox synagogue, Bradford – thus making Diana my first cousin once-removed.
The highlights of the Bergson family (descending from Philip and Leah Bergson) have to be:
1/ Max Bergson World weightlifting champion for the abdominal lift in the 10 stone division (a record which he still holds)
Note The Max Bergson championship cup still takes place annually in Mytholmrod organised by the amateur weightlifting association.
2/ Max Bergson also won the British Pistol shooting championship in 1946 for the Allied Forces( which must make him one of the best shots in England.
3/ Harry Bergson, the world peace campaigner, the highlight was the greeting card received from President Nasser.
4/Julius Bergson – but it must be said what a wonderful gesture – for the Bradford Jewish community to pay for the Memorial Garden in Israel (then Palestine) Lord Sieff (of M&S) was Chairman.
Sarah Powell of the Local Studies Secton of Bradford Central Library uncovered the following information on the Bergson family in Bradford:
“It seems that the Bergson family were established tailors in Bradford for nearly a century!
The first listing for a Philip Bergson, tailor, is in the 1900 Post Office directory. His business premises are at 19 Barlow Street, and he is living at 5 Hillside Villas. (The Bergsons – Philip, Leah and their five children – are also living on Barlow Street in the 1901 Census). By 1903, Philip moved shop to 137 East Parade, and is living at 6, Coleridge Place. In the 1923 Post Office directory, another Bergson, Mendall/Mendel (1894-1964, who had a daughter, Judith), is based at 64, Godwin Street, and Philip is still at East Parade, although he now lives at 8 Spring Bank Place. Philip Bergson becomes P. Bergson and Sons in the 1927 Kelly’s directory, still at East Parade, and by 1938, the business has moved to 82 and 84 Barkerend Road, where they stayed until 1984 (listed in phone books). In 1938, Mendel Bergson is at 24, Swaine Street, and 70, St. Mary’s Road, Manningham. In the 1965 Barret’s Directory, Mendel is a ‘bespoke tailor’ at 65, Broadway.
I also found an entry for a Mrs Leah Bergson at 29, Oak Lane, Manningham, in the 1927 directory, and an Abraham Bergson at Southfield Square in 1938.
The following information is copied directly from the national Archives website at this web address:
http://www.nationalarchives.
Tilly Bergson (Kreutzer was their original family name) was the 4th eldest of seven children. She was born in Russia in 1872 and died in Manchester in 1950. She came to England with her mother and other members of her family c.1890 and they settled in Bradford, her brother Philip, the eldest Bergson child, was already in England the first of the family to come here where he’d found work as a tailor. The Bergsons came first to Manchester, Leftens and Mottel Sandler had vouched for them. They soon settled in Bradford however, where Philip Bergson was working as a tailor. The Bergsons lived at 46 Heap Lane, Bradford.
The second eldest Bergson child was Max, then there was Minnie, Tilly, Mendel, Fanny and Herman. Fanny Bergson was born on 20/4/1883 in Riga, she was a hunchback. Herman Bergson was born in 1884, he died in 1975. Herman served as a recruiting sergeant in Canada during World War I.
There is an interesting family story regarding Doris Bergson (1849-1936) mother of the Bergson children. Doris got married at the age of 17. Doris Bergson (nee Hyman) was the only child of Fernand a prosperous fur-merchant. Doris (Darushka was brought up by an old servant Anna. Fernand opposed her plans to marry Jacob, a German wandering musician and so Doris eloped walking out of her home over the prostrate body of her father. Meyer did not prove a good husband, in the end he deserted Doris leaving her to bring up their children.
Doris Bergson’s (nee Hyman) mother was called Esther, she died when Doris was very young.”
