Julius Schonermann 1805 – 1892

39. Julius Schonermann 1805 – 1892

Julius Schonermann was born in the year 1805, most likely in Germany. By 1892 he was residing in a very respectable detached house on Houghton Place, Manningham.

It is actually thought that a room in his rather large house doubled up as the earliest Orthodox Synagogue between the years 1886 and 1906. This is deduced from information from JCR’s website that the Schull was held at 22 Houghton Place, while his residence is given as simply Houghton Place on the Registry of Interments for the Reform Section at Scholemoor Cemetery.

Although his occupation is listed as Gentleman, it may be assumed that he was during his career some years before a stuff merchant like many of his peers in the Bradford Jewish Community of the time.

He died on the 6th day of October 1892, at the ripe old age of  87. The informant on his death was Rabbi Dr Joseph Strauss.
