3. Serine Unna 1812-1877
Serine Unna was born in the year 1812 in Germany, and was the daughter of Wolff and Rosa Saloman. In Bradford she was the wife of the merchant, and ‘Grand Old Man’ of Jewish Bradford, Jacob Unna.
Their residence was at the grand town house of 2 Eldon Place, a bespoke dwelling set across four storeys, just off Manningham Lane. It is still situated opposite what was for many years Woods music shop, built on the site of what was once the Theatre Royal, originally called the Alexandra Theatre.
Perhaps the couple were regular attendees of plays and shows at the theatre, where the famous actor Sir Henry Irving collapsed on stage and later died at the Midland Hotel in Bradford after a performance of ‘Becket’ in October 1905.
Serine Unna died on the 29th December 1877. The Informant of her death was her son, Charles Frederic Unna.
The famous actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft (1907-1991) can be counted as one of her descendants, as can the contemporary French author, composer, and singer. Emily Loizeau, born 1975.
